I put my house up for sale last week. It's been a long, hard journey to this point - but we're looking to move to a warmer climate from the cold winters of Northern Illinois. 

When we moved in, the house had no faceplates on light switches or outlets, no light fixtures, no appliances, and was generally dirty and ignored. We knew the owners before the owners we bought it from - and from all accounts they took great care of the house during their 25+ years of ownership. They may not have updated much, but took care of what was there. The folks they sold to let the house get into disrepair and then basically got foreclosed on.

We bought the house and took on the massive renovation project. We tore down walls, replaced darn near everything from plumbing to electrical, ductwork to furnaces - and the cosmetic things like flooring, fixtures, and paint. We spent more than I care to add up on the renovation. It was supposed to be our "forever" house - so spending a little more than economically logical was fine. The best example of that is moving the water heater and original ductwork. Moving the water heater cost us something like $3,000 and replacing all of the ductwork - along with putting in 2 new furnaces and A/C units would have been a $30,000+ job if we paid full retail price. We created a 5th bedroom by doing those projects, but that doesn't create anywhere close to as much value as the cost.

But we learned in the winter of 2017/2018 that weather is a choice - and our lives have forever been changed. So we're moving on from this masterpiece and finding the next home to be our "forever" house...or giving up on that idea altogether.
